Indian Railway | Indian Railways plans to convert general coaches into AC compartments Indian Railways is preparing to convert general coaches into AC compartments on long-distance trains. The Railways claims that by converting the compartments to AC, passengers traveling in AC coaches will not be able to travel comfortably. Although the Railways has not yet made an official announcement, the modified general AC coaches will have seats for 100-200 passengers, so the rates will be lower to allow the general public to use these coaches, railway officials told the Times of India.
The new AC compartments will have fully reserved seats and automatic closing doors. The Times of India reported that the Railways has already started preparing the plan and discussions are underway. Although no confirmation has been received from the Railways, the first of the AC General Class coaches are likely to be manufactured at the Railway Coach-Factory in Kapurthala, Punjab.
All coaches that were not reserved after the Covid-19 epidemic were converted into reserved compartments. Railways have recently introduced AC Economy compartments which are cheaper than AC3 tire coaches. Economy coaches had been added as a choice for sleeper passengers.
At the same time, the Railways announced the resumption of all regular train services prior to the Covid restrictions. With this announcement, more than 1700 trains that were halted due to Covid expansion will resume service in the next few days.
Since the announcement of the first lockdown in March 2020, the routine operations of the railways have changed. After a hiatus, the railways came to a complete standstill before the resumption of special train services. Currently, 95% of express trains are back on track. 25% of these trains still operate as special services.
Indian Railways has recently announced the launch of e-catering services to provide better services to its passengers. The decision by Indian Railways came after 18 long months. The central leadership had discussed issues related to food served on trains, base kitchens, onboard kitchens, bedrolls, and blankets.
