Tesla, an electric vehicle giant, is all set to launch in India. The Tesla Company is registered and operates in Bangalore. Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y vehicles have already been tested on Indian roads. According to a new report, four more Tesla models have been approved by the Union Ministry of Road Transport. Money Control reports that the vehicle service portal under the ministry has made this clear.
It is expected that two variants of the Model 3 and Model Y will be launched in the country first. But the company has not officially confirmed this information. Both models are entry-level vehicles from Tesla. Higher models like the Model S and Model X will arrive in India later.
Tesla's models have been recognized for their compliance with Indian roads, compliance with pollution control regulations, and compliance with safety regulations (homogenization). Neither the central government nor Tesla has specified which models. However, there are indications that two variants of Tesla's flagship models, the Model 3 and the Model Y, will be approved.
Tesla vehicles are expected to be brought in as CBU or fully built units. For this reason, prices are likely to rise significantly. The Model 3 and Model Y is expected to be priced above Rs 60 lakh. Tesla will also set up its first dealerships in metropolitan cities. If Tesla is willing to manufacture parts locally, the price will drop significantly. This is less likely to happen soon.
Earlier, Tesla chief Elon Musk had spoken out against India's taxes. India imposes a 100 percent import duty on electric vehicles (EVs) priced above $ 40,000 (approximately Rs. 30 lakhs). 60 percent for those under $ 40,000. Tesla has asked the Center to reduce taxes, albeit temporarily. But companies, including Tata, have recently come out against it.
Meanwhile, Tesla has formed a local team and is moving fast with India's operations. The company had earlier registered Tesla under the name 'Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd'. Tesla is a company known as a guide to electric vehicle manufacturers. This American company is known as one of the most valuable automakers in the world. Earlier, there were reports that Tesla would set up a manufacturing plant in India. No such indications are currently available.
