Amravati: Andhra Pradesh has repealed the bill to make the state three capitals. Amravati will now be the permanent capital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi even laid the foundation stone for the development of Amravati as the capital city.
The three capitals bill was first introduced by the government of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy and withdrawn today. The Advocate General on behalf of the Government formally submitted the Government's decision in the Andhra High Court. The bill for three capitals was withdrawn. He opposed the decision to have three capitals, including the BJP. The state government today gave in to the issue raised by the opposition.
Last year, former Governor Biswa Bhushan Harichandan signed a bill in the Assembly calling for three capitals. The Andhra Pradesh Decentralized-Joint Development Zone Bill and the Andhra Pradesh Capital Development Authority (Withdrawal) Bill, 2020 were passed in the House. According to this, it was announced that there would be three administrative centers viz., Visakhapatnam, Amravati, and Kurnool.
Strong protests were raised against the bill from various quarters. The High Court had asked why a state has three administrative centers and where the money for implementation can be found. The High Court had criticized the government for lacking foresight in the bill and said that the general administration of the state should be taken forward without looking at local politics.
Jagan Mohan could not give a detailed answer to the court's questions. At the same time, strong opposition from opposition parties, including the BJP, erupted. The bill was withdrawn to quell public anger after the state suffered a week of severe floods.
