Chennai: A red alert has been issued in 16 districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, in the wake of strong low pressure.

The meteorological office said that the low-pressure area will intensify and move towards Chennai on Friday morning. Extreme winds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected in the northern coastal districts and Puducherry-Karaikal areas.

Holidays were announced for schools in Chennai and nearby districts on Friday. It has been raining intermittently in Chennai city since Thursday morning. In the evening it turned into heavy rain with thunder. In some places, floods again formed. Because of this, traffic was diverted to other routes. 600 giant motor pumps have been set up to avoid floods.

Heavy rains also lashed Tamil Nadu from November 6 to 11. Due to this, the life of the people in Chennai was affected. Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in Nagapattinam and Cuddalore ports. Puducherry also received heavy rainfall. Four trains were completely canceled and 17 trains were partially canceled due to heavy rains and landslides, Southern Railway said.
